Your instructor will prepare you for, and advise you when to apply for both the theory and practical tests. If you have already attempted one or both of these before coming to us, we will advise you on whatever action is needed to achieve the standard required. We do not guarantee the use of any car for test purposes to anyone who has booked a test prior to their instructor advising them to do so — we put our pupils in at the time when they are most capable of passing. Each person is an individual, and as such, you may learn quicker (or for that matter slower) than one of your friends. You will pass the practical driving test (which lasts around 40 minutes) by showing a DSA examiner you can drive safely and responsibly and display a sound knowledge of the Highway Code. To reach this standard, you will need professional lessons, and if possible, supervised private practice. The practical test itself will last for around 40 minutes, dependent on road and traffic conditions, and the examiner will try to put you at your ease, as they want you to be successful (it is actually more paperwork for them to fail you rather than pass you). All the examiner does is assess what you do - they don’t pass or fail you! They merely tell you whether your driving is at the correct standard or not. You are allowed to make a certain number of errors or driving faults and still pass the test, but if you commit 3 or more errors in one category, or display serious or dangerous faults, you will not pass on that occasion because you have not displayed driving up to the required standard. In this case, the DSA by law does not allow a repeat test within ten clear working days so that lessons are taken in between to correct the faults observed. |
